Banoffee Pies Records' new sub label, Otaku Records, was created to showcase their spectrum of leftfield electronic, with the label adopting "music for home" as their tagline, and Marenn Sukie stepping up for the first installment.

Malinal is like a marriage between early Thievery Corporation and Bonobo, melding the repetitive grooves of the former with the live instrumentation and depth of the latter. This six-track EP digs into trip-hop and downtempo, and puts an emphasis on instrumentally layered compositions and deep, dusky bass that resonates throughout the album. "Temo" pushes the tremble of saxophone through jangling chimes, lofty strings and echoing percussion, and is followed closely by standout track "Mauá." The full, cinematic approach the track takes on is entirely Bonobo-esque, using live percussion to give it richness, while wisps of clarinet work in time with the introduction of strings.
