Vol. 4 is the fourth studio album by British rock band Black Sabbath, originally released in September 1972 via Vertigo Records in the UK and Warner Bros. Records in the US.
Considered the pioneers of heavy metal, Black Sabbath defined the genre with releases such as Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970) and Master of Reality (1971). Selling over 70 million records worldwide, Black Sabbath have been described as the "Greatest Metal Band" of all time by MTV, placing second in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list, and ranking at number 85 in Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
Vol. 4 was recorded over two weeks at the Record Plant in Los Angeles in May 1972, and was the first Black Sabbath album not to be produced by Rodger Bain, instead being self-produced by the band (Patrick Meehan, the band's then-manager, is listed as co-producer, though his actual involvement in the album's production was minimal).
Despite a recording process that was plagued with problems, mostly due to spiralling substance abuse ("the great COKE-Cola Company of Los Angeles" is thanked in the album's notes), the song "Snowblind", which was also the album's working title, is the band's most blatant ode to cocaine, their drug of choice during this period, Vol. 4 is one of Black Sabbath's more experimental albums. The band's heavy side remains intact on the likes of "Tomorrow's Dream", "Cornucopia", and the seismic "Supernaut", while the guitar intro on "St. Vitus Dance" possesses a jaunty, Led Zeppelin-flavored quality, "Laguna Sunrise" is an evocative neo-classical instrumental, and the sensitive piano ballad "Changes" was inspired by drummer Bill Ward's divorce.
The album cover features a monochrome photograph of Ozzy Osbourne with hands raised throwing the peace sign, taken during a Black Sabbath concert.
Despite the single "Tomorrow's Dream" failing to chart, Vol. 4 earned Platinum certification in the US and Canada, and Silver in the UK. The album peaked at #8 on the UK and #13 on the US Billboard 200 Albums charts.
This LP record is reissued (June 2015) on 180 gram vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with insert and CD album copy, pressed in Europe.
